Do It Yourself?

Yes! There is nothing magical when it comes to setting up a VPN for remote access. However, doing it yourself will require a basic understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, domain name servers (DNS), static IPs, and routable IPs. Instructions for setting up your own VPN for remote access are below.

All Ethernet enabled Sam Jackson products have an IP address in the range of 10.52.18.0/24 and look for a default gateway at 10.52.18.254. For this reason for successful VPN communication you must have a gateway available at 10.52.18.254. This addressing scheme is hard coded in each product and can NOT be changed.

Theoretically any VPN type will work as long as it correctly routes traffic between the remote device (computer, iPhone, iPad, etc) to the Moisture Mirror network, but after years of experience and testing PPTP is the recommended VPN solution. We also recommend requiring encryption for all VPNs and setting remote devices to route all traffic to the VPN router.

When creating your VPN setup it may be useful to note you will need routable IP address from your ISP for remote devices to connect to. In the case of a dynamic IP address you will need to setup a service like DynDNS to maintain a single domain name your remote devices can connect to. If your ISP provides you with a static IP address a domain name is not required, but we have found domain names to be simpler for the typical user to remember. Our Remote Access Service includes use of yourgin.moisturemirror.com domain name.

If remote trouble-shooting by Samuel Jackson technicians is desired you will need to provide a user name, password, and the domain name or static IP address to our technical staff. Note that we can not guarantee that our technical staff will be able to connect to your VPN. For the highest chance of Samuel Jackson technicians being able to gain access to your VPN you should use a PPTP VPN.
